Israeli forces arrest Palestinian Oscar winner
Israeli forces are detaining Nobel Prize-winning Palestinian author Hamdan Ballal in the occupied West Bank after clashes between Palestinians and Jewish settlers, activists said.
The settlers ransacked the man’s house in the village of Susya in a raid on Monday, Jewish-American activists said.
Soldiers reportedly beat Hamdan, one of the four directors of the film “No Other Land,” and took him away in an ambulance, according to one of the film’s directors, Yuval Abraham. The soldiers denied the allegations.
Activists said masked Israeli soldiers stormed the village at around 6 p.m. local time.
Those who went to report the incident were also not spared as the protesters beat them with sticks and broke the windows of their vehicles, until Israeli soldiers intervened.
Without mentioning Hamdan by name, the Israeli Defense Ministry said it had arrested three Palestinians on charges of throwing stones at soldiers.
