Mitchell's 35 points lift Fever over Sky 93-78; Clark and Reese sit out
CHICAGO (AP) Kelsey Mitchell scored 35 points on seven 3-pointers and the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 93-78 on Sunday, even without two of its players: Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.
Clark was out in her fourth consecutive game due to a groin injury in the game with Indiana, and she was on the field in only five of the squad games, and Reese was just in her second straight game out with a back problem with the Sky.
Aliyah Boston had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists alongside the Fever (14-12), who secured three double-digit wins over the Chicago this season. Makayla Timpson and Aari McDonald contributed to 14 and 10 points off the bench respectively.
Her 100th career 20-point game is second in franchise history only to Tamika Catchings and her eighth 30-point game. It was also the 200th career steal of her career and the Fever scored 31 points out of 23 turnovers.
Rachel Banham made six three-pointers and 26 points on the Sky (7-18). Kia Nurse contributed 14 points, Rebecca Allen 13 points and Kamilla Cardoso 12 points and 12 rebounds.
A 16-point margin on the Fever lead early into the fourth quarter was reduced to six or less in the last five minutes but Mitchell responded by making a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to quash the threat.
The first quarter ended on an 18-2 run by Indiana with a score of 26-13. Mitchell scored 13 and the Fever scored 14 points on the basis of nine Chicago errors.
In the second quarter the lead was extended to 16 points, the half finished 51-39.
Chicago was able to start fast in the third quarter and the lead was narrowed down to 56-55 at the halfway mark on straight jumpers by Nurse. Mitchell replied with a three and a lay up, followed by consecutive baskets by Timpson that increased the difference to 65-55. The buzzer beater of Lexie Hull gave the score of 75-61 at the end of the third quarter.
