A witness told NBC Miami, "You could hear tires screeching, you could hear banging and crashing, and you could smell the burnt in the air."
In Miami-Dade County, Florida, on Interstate-95, 18 cars crashed into each other in a chain reaction, injuring more than two dozen people.
According to NBC Miami, Local 10 News, and the Miami Herald, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) claimed that the accident happened at about 11:25 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Ives Dairy Road. It hurt 29 individuals, 13 of whom were taken to the hospital.
FHP Lt. Alex Camacho told Local 10 News that a tractor-trailer that was going south on I-95 didn't stop and smashed into cars in traffic.
Camacho added, "Because of this, the tractor trailer hit several cars, which set off a chain reaction of crashes."
NBC Miami talked to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, who said that 29 people were hurt in the crash, 13 of whom were sent to surrounding hospitals for their injuries.
NBC Miami said that one adult was taken to the hospital as a trauma alert patient. There were also nine adults and three children who were sent to the hospital. Camacho informed Local 10 News that several of the persons who were in the incident were taken to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital with minor injuries.
According to NBC Miami, the other sixteen passengers were checked out at the scene and didn't need any more medical care.
The Florida Highway Patrol and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue did not react right away to a request for comment.
Luis Rodriguez was one of the people who saw the incident on his way home on Thursday night. He told NBC Miami that it was a shocking sight to see as he drove by.
He told the site, "You could hear tires screeching, banging, and crashing, and you could smell the smoke in the air." "The Miami-Dade Police Department Fire Rescue, highway troopers, and everyone else got involved so swiftly. They got back to me in a few minutes.
He told Local 10 News, "All you could see driving by were wrecked cars, trucks, and people being carried out on stretchers." "Almost like a scene from a movie."
Local 10 News says that a fuel leak halted part of the I-95 highway overnight, and traffic was rerouted to Ives Dairy Road. The news site said that the route opened again about 6:20 a.m.
Police didn't know who was driving the tractor-trailer, and they didn't know what caused the crash. Camacho did say, though, that the driver of the tractor-trailer will be charged.
