The 44-year-old actor and producer went to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 26, to promote his next space-based blockbuster Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi comedy based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name.
Gosling plays a middle school science teacher named Ryland Grace in the movie. He has to journey 11.9 light-years into space to find out why dozens of stars and the sun are dying, which could kill all life on Earth.
Gosling remarked, "It took me places I've never been and showed me things I've never seen." "It was both sad and amusing. This story is about a fearful guy who needs to achieve something impossible. I was a nervous guy who had to accomplish something impossible, and I was just trying to make this into a movie.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who won an Oscar for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed Project Hail Mary from a script by Drew Goddard. Goddard also adapted Weir's book The Martian into the space-faring movie that starred Matt Damon.
The Hall H discussion, which was filled with footage, was moderated by Josh Horowitz and featured Lord, Miller, Goddard, Weir, and Gosling.
The first five minutes of the movie were really funny. They showed Gosling's Grace waking up from a cryogenic slumber. He labelled her "an ordinary person in this extraordinary situation." The Barbie star said, "You might have noticed that he looks like a space caveman in this placenta onesie." He also said that a placenta onesie is a costume "I hope to see at Comic-Con one of these days."
Gosling stated he "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." He worked closely with Goddard and Weir.
He went on, "What inspires me about him is that he reacts to a lot of things the way I would or a lot of us would, and he's scared of the job at hand in the right way." "He's someone who had given up on himself on Earth, but now he has a chance to believe in himself again."
A teaser trailer that came out on June 30 shows Gosling's character spending a lot of time alone in space. Sandra Hüller, his co-star, calls his endeavour "Project Hail Mary," and it looks like he makes friends with an alien along the way.
The team said that the alien that looks like a mineral is called Rocky. Gosling said, "It's too early to talk about Rocky." "He's not here to talk for himself."
The Jim Henson Company will use a mix of computer-generated animation and puppetry to bring the faceless, five-limbed creature to life, as shown in a different scene.
Miller remarked, "It comes alive in a way that makes you want to die for this character." He also said that odd animals don't require faces to be loved.
Miller, Lord, and their designers worked hard to make sure that the math and physics of Project Hail Mary were correct. When they had questions about astronomy, they asked Weir.
Miller stated in the end, "it's a story about connection, hope, and humanity." The narrative is terribly sad.
Lord joked that the movie "answers the question, 'Can adult men make friends in six days if the universe depended on it?'"
Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung are also in Project Hail Mary, which comes out in theatres on March 20, 2026. The 2025 San Diego Comic-Con will be from July 24 to July 27.
