Ryder attended the American Conservatory Theater where she learnt to act. She gained her on-screen debut when she was 14 years old in the 1985 film Lucas. Since then she has been a domestic celebrity due to her big characters in movies such as Beetlejuice (1988), Heathers (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Mermaids (1990) and many others.
