The woman says her aunt ignored the dog for years and won't give him back even though she found him abandoned.
A woman asks the Reddit community for help after a nasty family fight over her aunt's dog. She writes from a private account about how she got the dog without planning to and why she won't give him back.
She writes, "My Aunt (K for short) has used me to watch her small dog for free for years." She said that the animal was "neglected" by K for years, never getting the right food, toys, or trips to the vet.
This woman says that things reached their worst point in August 2024. She lost her temporary housing, and she dumped her dog at the pound. This made me drive two hours in the middle of the night to get him back.
When she thought about the dog being left behind, she made her position clear. "I told her that if I took him, she wouldn't get him back, and I would claim rights to him." "She agreed by text," she says next.
According to her, the dog, whose name is Vik, has now become a happy and loved pet. "Old Chihuahua mix Vik is happy and healthy. She has toys, a warm bed, a little brother, and gets vet care," she says with pride.
Even though her aunt's situation is unstable, there is now strife again. "K hasn't found stable housing yet, and she and my mother are currently fighting in court for guardianship of my grandmother, who has dementia," she writes. In spite of the ongoing drama in her family, she says she has stayed out of it and is still taking care of her grandma and her rescue dogs.
She says, though, that her aunt has become very angry and wants Vik to come back. "K has started to text me a lot, telling me I need to give back Vik or she will call the police because I stole her dog," she says.
The woman tells him that she had already done what she needed to do to officially own Vik. She writes, "Because Vik didn't have a microchip before, I basically claimed him as a stray and registered him with my local shire." She thought that her aunt never really owned the dog because it had never been registered.
Even so, she says the threats from her aunt are making things worse. She says, "No matter what, I'm afraid she might try to take him by force, and I don't know if she has a legal right to Vik."
Trying to meet her aunt in the middle has not worked out. "I've tried to negotiate visitation, but she won't listen. She keeps telling me I'm stealing my cousin's dog, and my cousin is so upset," she says.
The sign says that her choice is based on her desire to keep Vik from going back to a dangerous place. "I don't want him to go back to that awful place." "He is mine," she writes with firmness. Her last question on Reddit is an easy one: "AITAH?"
A lot of people quickly backed her up and told her she was right to keep the dog safe. One person told her straight out, "NTA." Send her a letter telling her to stop. She is going to back off. If not, tell the cops you were harassed.
Others told her to stop talking to her aunt at all costs. "DO NOT STOP HER." "These texts and calls will serve as proof," the user added.
The poster says she is "known for being neutral in all family drama" and just wants to keep caring for Vik. However, her top concern is still Vik's health, even when family pressures her and bad things happen as a result.
