Instead, he made it clear that he wouldn't be silenced by his critics, especially Donald Trump.
When his show came back on Tuesday, the late-night talk show host didn't say sorry for the things he said last week that got him temporarily suspended by Disney.
Kimmel carefully chose his words when he admitted that some people thought what he said about Kirk's death was "ill-timed or unclear or maybe both." He then told them, "I get why you're upset."
The host made a bad connection last week between the suspect in the shooting of the conservative celebrity earlier this month and the "Maga gang." He also made a joke about how Trump's reaction was like "how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish."
When asked about the controversy on Tuesday, Kimmel got choked up and said, "It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man." Once more, it wasn't his "intention" to "blame any specific group" for what Kirk's killer did.
It was made clear that he "meant it" when he wrote a word of love on Instagram for Kirk's family last week, before this fight started.
But Kimmel also made it clear that the current uproar would not make him change how he treated Trump.
