Matthew says "There was a period of about eight years during which I needed to have brief talks with her during our Sunday phone calls since she was telling me so much of that stuff. I would have told her something on Sunday between son and mom and then on Tuesday, I would pick it up in the news or in the local paper. She couldn't help herself."
"We were on a hiatus," adds Kay. Grin: Matthew, we were having some dull talks on Sunday. I wouldn't tell you s-."
The break followed when Key, or as her family called her, MaMac, went on a press visit to the childhood house of Matthew, whom he had watched on television several days later. The father and son couple also laughs when capturing the tale.
Kay tells it by walking people through the house, pointing out where Matthew slept. Someone called him and said, Are you spying what your mama is doing? But I was too proud and I was telling the world.Matthew adds, I call her, she answers the phone. I go, 'Mom, what'd you do?' She says, 'What?' I said, 'Don't tell me, 'What?' I could listen to the identical show I was viewing which she is carrying the camera in the background around the house. She goes, 'Oh, that. I didn't think you'd find out.' "
The two burst into laughter. "Oh, boy! Yes," says Kay.
However eight years later, "I became stable enough in my own position and fame that I was like, you know what? Whatever the hell the mom can say," says Matthew. And we go to red carpets and she said, "And I take the lasso off and just go. I was like 'No rules at all. Say whatever you like about the raunch. And she did and it was fine. It's much more fun now."
Matthew and Kay are now the stars of the survival thriller The Lost Bus with Levi, 17 - the oldest son of Matthew and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey who also has two more sons, Vida, 15 and Livingston, 12. The movie is framed by the Camp Fire that happened in 2018 and covered over 150,000 acres and resulted in the death of 85 individuals. The film directed by Paul Greengrass puts Kay back on the big screen after her cameo in 2011 in Bernie, and is the acting debut of Levi.
In the lost bus, Matthew acted as Kevin McKay, a rogue bus driver who saves 22 school kids. Kay is the onscreen mother to Matthew, and Levi is his son.Kay, who says she wished to be in acting since childhood, resides with Matthew and the family in Austin, Texas. In addition to being a star, the matriarch has taught her children and grandchildren the value of positive thinking.
If there is a single lesson that I would maybe I taught to the kids, it is You are what you think, says Kay. And when you believe you are stupid, you are stupid. You suppose you are smart, you are. And when you think you are handsome, you are handsome.
