The father from Maryland was sent to El Salvador without a good reason. He was later brought back to the U.S. but was charged and faced new removal efforts.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who has become a symbol of President Trump's mass removal campaign around the world, was sent to El Salvador without a warrant in March and then brought back to the U.S. months later to face charges and more deportation attempts.
His government has said many times that he is a member of the dangerous Salvadoran gang MS-13 and shouldn't be allowed to stay here. In August, people in charge of immigration said they were going to send him to Uganda. His family and lawyers say he is not involved with any gangs and that he is being punished for standing up for his civil rights. They want to get him out of jail and stop his removal.
Trump's crackdown on immigration has put Abrego, 30, in the middle of it all. His legal fights bring to light the new deportation policies that the administration wants to use.
The Salvadoran dad of three is involved in a lot of court issues right now.
He most recently asked for refuge in immigration court after being sent back to the U.S.
