On October 6, the three individuals were awarded the Nobel Prize in science by doing their work in peripheral immune tolerance. There are three scientists who have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
These are Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, Fred Ramsdell and Mary E. Brunkow.

Brunkow is a program manager and senior in the institute of systems biology in Seattle. He is 64 years old. Ramsdell is aged 64 and he is an employee of Sonoma Biotherapeutics based in San Francisco where he works as a scientific assistant. Sakaguchi is a famous professor at Osaka University in Immunology Frontier Research Centre in Japan. He is 74 years old.

The immune system has a lot of processes that interact each other to locate and attack bacteria, viruses, and other destructive elements. Significant defence cells, such as T cells, are taught how to identify bad guys. Others are to be eliminated in the thymus in case of their malfunction that may result in inflammatory illnesses. This is referred to as central tolerance. Another manner in which the body regulates the system was revealed to the Nobel Prize winners.
Nobel Committee added that it was initiated when Sakaguchi discovered the existence of a kind of T cell known as T-regs in 1995. This form of T cell was previously unknown. Subsequently in 2001, a bad mutation in gene known as Foxp3 was discovered by Brunkow and Ramsdell. Another rare inflammatory disease in humans involves this gene.
Two years later, the Nobel Committee reported that Sakaguchi related the findings to indicate that the growth of those T-regs are regulated by the Foxp3 gene. These T-regs then seek and eliminate other forms of over-reactive T cells.
According to Brunkow, she and Ramsdell had been in the same small biotech company. They were investigating the reason why the immune system of a particular kind of mice was over working. They were forced to apply new techniques in discovering the mouse gene that was causing the issue but soon they realised that the same could contribute significantly to human health.
This giant difference in the functioning of the immune system in the body was brought about by the tiniest change in the DNA.
Marie Wahren-Herlenius, a rheumatology professor at the Karolinska Institute said the work ushered in a new field of immunology. Researchers all over the world are using regulatory T cells in their quest to discover new methods of treating cancer and inflammatory diseases.
