The first official song from Swift's 10th studio album, Midnights, came out today. It's called "Anti-Hero." The music video for Swift's song about dealing with her fears came out on Friday morning. One line from the song has really caught people's attention.
Swift says near the end of the song, "Sometimes I feel like everyone is a hot baby and I'm the monster on the hill." Too big to hang out, moving slowly towards your favourite city. "Got through the heart but never killed."
At first glance, it's easy to see what the singer-songwriter is trying to say: She thinks that everyone else is cute and young, but she's a monster that no one can touch. In a behind-the-song explainer on her social media, Swift had said that "Anti-Hero" was "a guided tour" of her issues, such as her fear that her life "has become unmanageably sized."
Many people who loved the TV show 30 Rock quickly recognised the "sexy baby" line. In "TGS Hates Women," episode 16 of season 5 of the show, played by Tina Fey, Liz Lemon hires a female comic named Abby (Cristin Milioti) to help the writers' room fight claims of sexism at the show, but she doesn't like Abby's style or personality. Abby's childish looks and baby voice make Liz laugh, so she tells her, "You can drop the sexy baby act." That's when Abby says something memorable: "The sexy baby thing isn't an act... I'm a very sexy baby."
If the line is a not-so-subtle reference to 30 Rock, it would be an interesting addition to Swift and Fey's long-running joke war. It all began when Swift told Vanity Fair in 2013: "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." She was responding to Fey and Poehler, who were hosting the Golden Globes that year and making fun of the singer's love life by telling her she should stay away from Michael J. Fox's son, who was Mr. Golden Globes that night.
Fey brought up the incident again the next year at the Globes, telling Poehler on stage, "I love you, and there's a special place in hell for you!" for the incident. And in 2016, Fey's show Unbreakable had Titus Andromedon, played by Titus Burgess. She even says, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women," which is probably another reference to the first problem.
When they presented together at the 2020 Golden Globes, Poehler and Swift seemed to end their feud from seven years before. On stage, they did a piece that made things tense between them, but in the end, they made up because they both loved animation. At least, this seemed to stop all the faking until now... maybe. After all, Swift does love her Easter eggs and nods to other things.
