America's Got Talent season 19 winner revealed: Here's what they plan to do with the prize

After millions of votes and a lot of great acts, America's Got Talent viewers chose singer Richard Goodall as the winner of season 19. The school cleaner from Terre Haute, Indiana, won over hearts with his honest covers of Journey, Michael Bolton, and Survivor. Judge Heidi Klum was one of them.

Klum, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara, along with the other judges, gave Goodall high marks all season for how passionately he sang power duets and rock songs from the 1980s. In fact, Goodall said that he had been singing while cleaning for 23 years, and it was the students who suggested that he try out.

Klum gave him a Golden Buzzer early in the season, and he went viral. But Goodall told Entertainment Weekly that he was "completely and totally surprised" that he beat comedian Learnmore Jonasi, quick-change magician Solange Kardinaly, doggy dance act Roni Sagi and Rhythm, and six other finalists.

She says, "It's been a wild, wonderful roller coaster," and adds that the only part that's over is the show. That being said, I haven't really felt the effects yet. I haven't really thought about it yet. It hasn't changed at all."

RICHARD GOODALL: She's always stood up for me. I mean, she's been so amazing to me through all four songs. But everyone has, including the kids who run me around the AGT grounds, Simon, Howie, and Sophia, and the people who work behind the scenes.

What do you plan to do? Are you still going to keep your job as a cleaner?

Yes, I still plan to do that for a while, then make some investments, and then make smart plans. Angela, his wife, and I talk about everything together. We only talk about plans together and don't make any other plans. It won't be anything fancy or expensive because we're not fancy people. People like you and me, and the money is... we just try to be careful with it. We don't know what's going to happen or what to expect.

Just what is it about the music of the 1980s that speaks to you? Did you want to cover any songs but didn't end up doing them?

I have nothing bad to say about music today, but music from that time... People still sample songs from our time, you know?

I'm not sure if it was... It wasn't innocent, but it was different. Watch when I sang "Don't Stop Believing." Now the kids are singing that and "Eye of the Tiger."

I feel like music was different back then than it is now.

There were many songs I would have liked to sing. Getting the songwriters to agree to them is the hard part. Then we have to practise them some more until we can make them our own.

And what do you want to do after this? Are there going to be records or tours?

I don't really have any plans for what will happen next. At this point in our lives, things are pretty much up in the air for the first time. In a good way, not a bad one. Any idea is welcome, whether it has to do with music or something else. Ange and I will talk about it and decide what's best for us before moving forward, no matter what comes our way. Yes, I'd like to sing songs all over America or something. I believe the most important thing is to encourage people to keep going with their plans, not give up hope, and look forward to a better day. In some ways, we've already done that. There is a lot going on in the world right now, and people just need a little hope, kindness, and love. I believe it's lost in this day and age.

There must have been another act that you really liked. Who was it?

My Facebook shows that I'm friends with a lot of the guests on the show. During every part of the show, it's hard not to connect with other people. I took shots with the Los Osos High School kids a long time ago. They recently lost one of their members, which was... terrible. It broke my heart when they were voted off, and they were taking shots at me, but if you look at my Facebook, you'll see that I posed with them.

Solange Kardinaly was very talented, and I thought she would be hard to beat on the show. But everyone else's ability at the end was huge... It's sad to see people leave, but that's how the show works. There can only be one winner, right? I made it to the top. It's still hard for me to believe that you went from being a normal guy singing to kids for 23 years to being the centre of attention. It's not right. It's weird, but fun.

Is there something else you'd like to say that I didn't ask?

I had the most fun with the people who work behind the scenes because I know what they do every day. On the other hand, everyone at AGT has been wonderful and helpful to me. Every time I walk by, we either shake hands or bump knuckles. Everything about the group party after the show was great.
