Shots were fired on October 8 in Sugar Land and at a car shop southwest of downtown Houston. Police think the two incidents are likely linked. Authorities say that four people have died, including the suspect, in a string of killings in the Houston area that they think are linked.
According to a news release posted on the Sugar Land Police Department's (SLPD) Facebook page, there was a shooting in the 12900 block of Dairy Ashford Road in the city of Sugar Land, which is southwest of Houston, on October 8 just before 1 p.m. local time.
"Upon arriving on the scene within minutes, SLPD officers discovered one female, with several gunshot wounds, in the driver seat of a white SUV that had gone off the road," SLPD reported.
"Two civilian witnesses assisted as officers performed lifesaving measures until EMS arrived shortly thereafter, transporting the woman to Ben Taub Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased," police said. They "immediately distributed" a "Be On the Look Out" warning about the suspect car, a grey SUV, to other police departments in the area, the post said.
"At this time, we have learnt the suspect and victim had a relationship and that this incident was not a random act of road-rage violence," the SLPD said, adding that officers were "coordinating with the Houston Police Department to understand the connection, if any, to two more shootings and a suicide within Houston city limits." According to Houston Police sergeant Larry Crowson, the same gunman was thought to have shot a mechanic about six miles away after a fight at an auto shop southwest of downtown Houston about 30 minutes after the shooting in Sugar Land.
At a news conference, the officer said, "We just know that the guy who shot up that place in Sugar Land drove to this location and went to the mechanic shop." NBC News reported that Crowson said that as the shooter was leaving the scene, someone from a nearby building began recording what was happening. The witness was then shot by the gunman.
According to Fox News, Crowson also said that the suspect's car has been linked to the two killings. The man had been driving a silver Ford Escape, with his description also linking him to the killings, NBC News reported, citing police.
