Last of 10 escaped New Orleans inmates, Derrick Groves, apprehended.

Derrick Groves was caught in Atlanta after a five-month search. He was the last person to get out of jail during the May 2025 break-in at the Orleans Parish Justice Centre in New Orleans.

The 28-year-old man was found hiding in a crawl space under a southwest Atlanta home. He is serving a life term for killing two people at a Mardi Gras block party in 2024.
To capture him, U.S. Marshals and local cops had to work together on a coordinated SWAT operation that included using petrol more than once to flush him out.

Through a broken cell door and a hole behind a toilet, Groves and nine other prisoners got away on May 16, 2025. CCTV video showed some of the escapees. There was a $50,000 prize for anyone who could help them find where he was hiding while he was on the run. A tip to New Orleans Crimestoppers led police to his home in Atlanta, where they were able to catch him. Groves is being held at the Fulton County Jail and could be sent back to Louisiana. Besides the crimes he was already convicted of, he and the other prisoners who escaped are now also being charged with breaking the jail rules.

This case shows how hard it is for police to find prisoners who have gotten away and how important tips from the public are in catching criminals. Derrick Groves has been caught, ending a five-month search that caught the attention of people all over the world.
