U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi got into a heated argument with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., on Tuesday. She accused Blumenthal of lying about his military record after he asked her about the political work her old law firm did.
The fight happened at a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing when Blumenthal asked Bondi about a merger involving Ballard Partners, the company she used to work for.
"I know that Brian Ballard, a long-time supporter and head of the law company where you worked, did a lot to get the Justice Department to drop that lawsuit against American Express GBT (Global Business Travel) during the merger. ... "What did you talk about with Mr. Ballard?" He asked Blumenthal. Bondi replied that Blumenthal was lying about his time in the service.
"Sen. Blumenthal, I can't believe you would point the finger at me for doing something wrong when you lied about your military service." "You lied, and you admitted it, to get elected as a U.S. senator," she said over the senator.
"You jerk!" I'm a lawyer by trade. "Don't ever question my honesty," she said. "Do not question my ability to be fair and impartial as attorney general, or anything regarding my former firm, Ballard Partners." Blumenthal has said in the past that he "misspoke" about his time in Vietnam. In 2010, he said that some of the things he had said before were not true.
Blumenthal said at the time, "I have made mistakes about my service a few times, and I'm sorry for that and take full responsibility." He said those words were "completely unintentional" and that the mistake had only happened a few times in the "hundreds" of talks he had given. "Unlike many of my peers, I chose to join the military and serve my country," he stated. "I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service."
