At the pre-screening Q&A, the actor who played Dr. Frank-N-Furter was asked to share any happy memories from making the movie in 1974. He did so by telling a story that doesn't sound at all fond.
Towards the end of the movie, Frank, Janet (Susan Sarandon), Brad (Barry Bostwick), and other characters jump into a swimming pool. "I remember everybody shivering after the pool scene," he said. "We were frozen, and the water was cold."
One actor got sick because it was so cold. He told her, "Susan actually got pneumonia." Susan was in Thelma and Lousie. "and treated it like a badge of honour." Whoever would stand still would hear them. Curry then told a story about his ex-co-star that he had heard from someone else. "I just heard that they've been making a documentary recently, and Susan was part of it," said he. "Even though they gave her a chair, she looked at the lights and said, 'No, no, that won't do.'" She then got up and moved all the lamps around.
Adding, "That's a real pro," he said. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment in 2014, Sarandon revealed that she had pneumonia on the set.
The actress said, "It was snowing and raining in the house, and for some reason there was no heat in the studio." I had pneumonia because I was mostly undressed and wet.
The Oscar winner told the news outlet that she was told to stop working on the movie until she felt better. "And so the doctor came and said I really shouldn't go back to work 'cause I had walking pneumonia," Sarandon said. It was up to them to either warm me up or put me in a hot bath between scenes. Their first thought was, "This is the American diva." They didn't like hearing any of that. The crew's attempts to make her feel better led to a fire on set, she said. "They created a screen that they put space heaters in so there was one warm place to go," she thought. "And everybody went in there, and then it went up in flames, and that was the end of that."
At the Rocky Horror event on Friday, however, Curry said he didn't remember there being a fire during filming. "Fire followed me from movie to movie, but I don't think there was one on that set," said he. "Rumour incorrect." Other places at the event heard Curry say that the support for the movie by LGBTQ+ people "means a lot" to him.
"I think the message of the film — 'Don't dream it, be it' — is very important," he said. He added that Rocky Horror has "given anyone permission to behave as badly as they really want to, in whatever way, and with whom."
