The federal government has started paying some teachers of CONUA universities who broke away from the University Teachers Union (ASUU) for 8 months.
This is coming at a time when members of the ASUU National Executive Council have completed preparations for an emergency meeting aimed at addressing the "half salary" they are being paid.
A member of CONUA and a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, who did not disclose his name on Sunday night, said the leaders of the union have already received feedback from the Minister of Labor and Employment, Chris Ngige.
The official also said that the minister assured the members of the new organization that they will start receiving the notification from Monday.
“We were not in the last strike. We have previously written to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment. Therefore, the minister checked our letter and gave the order," said the official.
Efforts to reach the CONUA National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, were unsuccessful and he is yet to respond to messages sent to him.
The spokesperson of the Minister, Olajide Oshundun confirmed that CONUA members will be paid their salaries as long as they are not on strike which has been going on for eight months.
He continued that those who joined the strike will not be paid since the No-work-no-back policy will still be in effect.
"What I know as the spokesperson of the Minister, Olajide Oshundun, is that the policy of 'No work, no pay' will work. That has not changed because it is a constitutional issue. It is also accepted by the ILO agreement. that if people go on strike they cannot be paid.
“So, if CONUA does not go on strike, they have the right to get their money. But if they go on strike, they will not be paid either," he said.
