2023. Atiku Abubakar's campaign office in Rivers is shut down
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar's campaign office in Rivers State has been locked up.
The Rivers State PDP Presidential Campaign Council said that the action was done on the orders of the Rivers State government.
The office, which is in GRA Port Harcourt, was locked up early on Friday morning.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State signed Executive Order 22 a few weeks ago. This order says that political parties can't set up campaign offices in residential areas without permission from the government.
But the Rivers State PDP PCC's media team said they had asked the state government for permission but haven't heard back in several weeks.
So, the group said, "The act is wrong because it hurts our basic right to speak freely about our interests."
It also said, "This egregious move by the Rivers State Government, seen through the lens of politics, tends to militarize our democracy and makes our dear state politically weaker when compared to other states in the country."
