Johannesburg — South Africa said on Friday that it would stop making sex work illegal. The country has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world, and there are a lot of crimes against women there. Under proposed legislation from the justice ministry, selling and buying sexual services will no longer be illegal.

Groups that work to help people say that there are more than 150,000 sex workers in the country.

"It is hoped that decriminalization will make it less likely that sex workers' human rights will be violated," Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said at a press conference. "It would also make it easier for people to get health care and give sex workers better protection, better working conditions, and less discrimination and shame."
