Tanzanian President Cancels Independence Day Celebration
GOD IS ONE AND DIFFERENT: Tanzanian President Cancels Independence Day Celebration, To Use Budget To Build Classrooms For Children In Need
Hassan, the country's first female president, said that the $445,000 budget for the event should be used to build eight dorms for children with special needs in primary schools all over the country.
She said that the celebrations were too expensive for what they were, so she decided to use the money for a more important project.
The country's minister of state, George Simbachawene, said in a statement on Monday that the money had already been given out.
"Before the debates and conferences, there will be different plans for regional and district leaders to do things like clean hospitals, schools, homes for the elderly, and places for people with special needs," he said.
The president's office, which is in charge of regional administration and local government, will get the money to the schools (PO-RALG).
This is not the first time Tanzania has called off the celebrations.
In 2015, when John Magufuli was president, the money from Independence Day was used to build a road in Dar es Salaam, which is the country's business capital.
In 2020, he did the same thing and told the budget to be used to help hospitals.
