People are upset with Aisha Buhari because she shared a fake CBN release on old notes.

The First Lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, is very popular on social media right now, but for a controversial reason. Tuesday morning, the president's wife allegedly sent out a statement that...

Earlier on Tuesday, the president's wife posted what she said was a statement from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) saying that old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes would be good until May 1, 2023.

The alleged statement from the Director of Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, said that the CBN gave the order after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, February 21.

"Because of the bad situation in Nigeria right now, Mr. President told the Central Bank of Nigeria in a closed meeting on February 20, 2023, to only reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes, which will be legal tender for the next 70 days, until May 1, 2023.

The statement says, "The Central Bank of Nigeria has been made aware of some fake and unauthorized messages that say the CBN has given the Deposit Money Banks permission to collect the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes. For clarity, and in line with Mr. President's broadcast on February 16, 2023, the CBN has been told to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes, which will be legal tender for 60 days, until April 10, 2023. So, people should not trust any message or piece of information about this topic that hasn't been officially released by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
