The wedding of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's son to Nasiru Ado Bayero, daughter of the emir of Bichi, has been called the most famous event of the year in Nigeria.
Yusuf Buhari and Zahra Nasir Bayero got married at the palace in Bichi on Friday. Thousands of people were there to watch. The airport in the northern Nigerian city of Kano was full of private jets as Nigeria's elite and important people from West Africa flew in for the wedding.
The BBC said that there was also a lot of security. Police and military officers were stationed around the palace and guarding it.
One of the emirates in Kano state is Bichi.
Nigerian online newspaper Premium Times says that the two met at the University of Surrey in the UK.
Yusuf is the president's only son and is 27 years old. Zahra is the emir's second daughter and is 19 years old. The emir of Kano, one of the most important Islamic leaders in Nigeria, is the brother of Emir Bayero.
The couple's pre-wedding photos went viral online in the country last week, and some people called the bride Zahra's dress "immoral" because it showed off her shoulders. But many people stood up for her.
Local media say that President Buhari put together a 145-person committee for the wedding celebrations before he went to the wedding on Friday. As he arrived in Bichi, the president was seen waving to his fans.
Even though A-list celebrities were there, the party was scaled down because of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the BBC, many of the guests wore face masks. Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami, who is also a trained imam, led the wedding.
Buhari's predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, whom he beat in the 2015 election, was one of the top politicians who went. Fatoumata Bah Barrow, who is the first lady of the Gambia, and Mahamadou Issoufu, who was the former president of the country next door, Niger, were also there.
On Saturday, the next day, the father of the bride, Nasir Ado Bayero, was officially named the emir of Bichi.
On Saturday, Aisha Buhari, who is the first lady of Nigeria, posted some photos of her husband and herself.
She wrote on Instagram, along with pictures of herself with other guests, that "everything is ready to welcome and accept our new daughter into the family."
