The wedding of the president's lone surviving son and the niece of the Emir of Kano, one of Nigeria's most renowned Islamic leaders, took place on Friday, making it one of the year's greatest celebrity events in the country. Members of the Nigerian elite and dignitaries from West Africa are said to have reportedly filled the runway of the Kano airport with private jets in order to attend the wedding of Yusuf Buhari, 27, and Zahra Nasir Bayero, 19. The state's entire inventory of five-star hotels was full.
According to the BBC, the bride price for the groom's family was 500,000 naira (£900), which is nearly ten times the typical sum in northern Nigeria. Nasir Ado Bayero, the father of the bride, was formally installed as the Emir of Bichi on Saturday; his brother is the Emir of Kano.
