Six alleged IPOB members and a police officer were slain in a new attack on a police facility.

In a purported attack by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on the 3-3 Police Divisional Headquarters in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, southeast Nigeria, a police officer was killed on Sunday.

The incident happened around 5:58 in the morning.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the state's police spokesperson, revealed this in a statement on Sunday. He said that six IPOB members were killed by police officers who resisted the onslaught.

The IPOB members and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network, allegedly attacked the police station in two SUVs and a Toyota Sienna, according to Mr. Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police.

The thugs, according to a police spokesperson, were armed with weapons and homemade explosives.

He claimed that when they arrived, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately in an attempt to get inside the building but were fiercely resisted by police officers under the command of the divisional police officer, who engaged the assailants in a shootout at first before a reinforcement team made up of military and police mobile force agents arrived on the scene.

Unfortunately, one station-affiliated police officer was killed during the gunfight, and the militants' inside-the-station petrol explosion partially damaged one of the offices, he claimed.

The attackers also set fire to one patrol car that was positioned in front of the station.

After the shoot-out, Mr. Ikenga claimed that some of the hoodlums managed to flee with bullet wounds. He claimed that everything was under control and being kept an eye on.

He continued, "Joint operations are ongoing to find the fleeing rebels.

The police claim that among the items taken from the gunmen during the operation were two AK-47 firearms, a Toyota Sienna car, and charms.

Increased attacks

Anambra State has experienced a decline in security, similar to other states in the southeast of Nigeria, as a result of a rise of armed assailants.

In the state's Idemili North Local Government Area, gunmen bombed the Ogidi Police Divisional Headquarters just 24 hours before to the incident. In the incident, three police officers perished.

Five days before to the Ogidi attack, gunmen in the council area targeted the same police building. According to the authorities, that attack resulted in the death of one of the gunmen.

In Ukpor, a town in the state's Nnewi South Local Government Area, gunmen attacked some Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) employees on Thursday. Yet according to the police, they stopped the attack. Gunmen kidnapped 15 National Youth Service Corps members in the state four days earlier. Nonetheless, the state's police were able to save them a few hours later.

At the state's Njikoka Local Government District, gunmen once more stormed the Abagana Divisional Police Headquarters on February 3. The gunmen attacked and killed two vigilante operators.

The regional deadly attacks have been attributed by the Nigerian government to IPOB. Nonetheless, the gang has consistently denied taking part in the attacks.

The movement for an independent Biafra state, which IPOB intends to be created from sections of South-east and South-South Nigeria, is being led by IPOB.
