Rejection of old naira notes: Ganduje threatens to punish banks and business owners who make mistakes
The administration of Kano state has issued a warning, stating that it will not hesitate to revoke the operating licenses of significant business owners or to take legal action against anyone who continues to accept the old naira notes as a form of payment.
The old naira notes are still considered legal cash, according to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who refuted the remark made by the commissioner for information and internal affairs, Malam Muhammad Garba.
He claimed that the Supreme Court had made clear that the old naira notes will continue to be accepted as lawful tender alongside the new ones until their slow and complete phase-out.
The governor stated that the government has become aware that some business owners, including those of supermarkets, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, traders in markets, gas stations, and motor parks, among others, have a habit of refusing to accept old naira notes in payment for goods and services.
Ganduje added that the state's economic decline is being made worse by some self-centered people's refusal to accept it, and that the issue is being made worse by the lack of new naira notes.
The statement continued, "Business and economic activities are significantly impacted by the naira redesign, and regrettably some self-centered individuals are capitalizing on the circumstance to inflict additional misery on the populace by refusing to accept the old naira notes during transactions.
He claimed that the population had already gone through enough hardship and that the state government would not permit a few self-centered individuals to make matters worse.
The state's governor urged residents to carry on with their legal errands and report anyone who refuses to take old naira notes to the relevant authorities.
