Following a vote for independence in the country's south, Sudan, once the biggest and most ethnically divided nation in Africa, separated into two nations in July 2011.
The government of Sudan has given its blessing to the independence of South Sudan, where the majority of Christians and traditionalists have fought against the Arab Muslim control of the north for decades.
Even so, there are still several concerns that haven't been settled, like how to divide the oil wealth and the border's demarcation, which continue to irritate the two adjacent nations.
Sudan has long been plagued by conflict.
One and a half million people have died in two civil wars between the north and south, and the ongoing conflict in Darfur has driven two million people from their homes and claimed more than 200,000 lives.
