An open letter was published pleading for the defense of journalism in Mali and Burkina Faso.

An open letter requesting action to safeguard journalists in Burkina Faso and Mali has been signed by at least 30 media and journalist rights organizations from around the world. This letter was released on May 3rd, which also happens to be World Press Freedom Day.
In this letter, the media and organizations expressed their concern over the killing of journalists and those who express their opinions, the blocking of media broadcasts by RFI and France 24, the violence against representatives of other media outlets French Liberation and Le Monde from Burkina Faso, and other indications that the government is attempting to repress people's rights.
Mali
The letter mentions the intimidation of journalists and human rights advocates in Mali, where the independent television channel Joliba TV was shut down between November and December of last year. The Bamako Journalists' Center was demolished in February of this year by some individuals. Just as radio host Ras Bath was detained for expressing his displeasure over the killing of former prime minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga by Mali authorities.
Because of this, 30 media outlets and these organizations are concerned about the rise in attacks on and mistreatment of journalists in Mali and Burkina Faso.
limiting journalists' Rights
Even on February 20 of this year, Alioune Tine, a United Nations specialist researcher on the protection of human rights, came out in the open and stated his concern about the abuse of people's rights in Mali.
Many media outlets from Burkina Faso, as well as international groups and publications like France 24, RSF, UPJ, Liberation, Wakat Sera, the Centre for the Protection of Journalists by Norbert Zongo, FIDH, Joliba TV News, Lefaso.net, Human Rights Watch, and numerous others, have signed this letter.
