John Karl Fetterman was born in West Reading, PA, on August 15, 1969. Karl, John's dad, worked as a partner at the insurance company Chubb and then started his own insurance company, which helped him make a good living. John grew up in a rich area of York, Pennsylvania. Both of his parents are said to be very strict Republican conservatives.
John went to Albright College and then got an MBA from the University of Connecticut. In 1993, he graduated.

Tragically, Fetterman's best friend died in a car accident while he was a student at UConn. John would say later that this event had a big effect on him and led him to want to work for the government. John started working at Big Brothers Big Sisters of America after two of his friends died.
