Pelé, the late global football champion, is known by the name Pelé, which is now recognized in the dictionary as denoting "a champion or a champion or something different as confirmed."
One of the most well-known Portuguese dictionaries in Brazil, Michaelis, has introduced the word "Pelé" as a new adjective and will keep using it.
The decision to add Pele's name to the dictionary followed a petition drive started by the Pele Foundation to honor the football legend, which garnered more than 125,000 signatures.
Pele, who won the World Cup three times and passed away in December of last year at the age of 82, is widely regarded as the greatest footballer in history.
Pele amassed a record 1,281 goals during the course of his 20-year football career while playing for Santos in Brazil and the New York Cosmos in there.
Since his passing from colon cancer, his old team Santos, the sports network SporTB, and the Pelé Foundation have pushed for the world football star's name to be acknowledged by being added to dictionaries.
The word will be included in the Michaelis dictionary after it is printed in physical copy, according to an announcement made by the dictionary's publishers on Wednesday. The word will be added to the online version of the Michaelis dictionary right away.
"Pelé adj. (adjective) A person who surpasses the rest, whose excellence, value, or superiority is not the same as anything or anyone, such as Pelé, nicknamed Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who is considered the greatest player of all time and bold, colorful, and different," is how the name is defined.
She claimed that The Pelé Foundation, a nonprofit founded in honor of the football hero in her background, was a proper tribute to Pele as well.
She added the word to the dictionary and tweeted about it because it is already used to describe someone who is exceptionally good at what they do.
