According to the United Nations, more than 4,200 peacekeeping personnel have perished worldwide in the 75 years that they have been working to maintain peace in war areas.

When paying respect to the soldiers who have given their lives since 1948, when they were first dispatched to nations experiencing conflict, turmoil, or war, the Secretary General of the Assembly, Antonio Guterres, disclosed this figure.

According to Guterres, it is important to reflect on the peacekeeping mission's accomplishments from Liberia to Cambodia as well as its failings from Yugoslavia to Rwanda, while also taking into account the mission's challenges.

The secretary added that despite the few issues that have arisen, it is time to recognize the more than 2 million peacekeeping personnel from 125 nations who have served 71 times since the Peace Committee dispatched the first team to end the Israeli-Arab conflict.

While laying flowers at the United Nations Center to memorialize those who gave their lives in this kind of service, Guterres paid respect to the 103 soldiers who lost their lives in 2022 from 39 different countries and referred to them as the "pillars of civil peace."

The secretary also expressed his displeasure with the way the mission of the peacekeeping forces is shifting from maintaining peace to engaging in combat in dangerous regions of the world.

193 Council members agreed to and accepted responsibility for the movement and regions Guterres wished to establish in order to address violence and combat terrorism.
