71 million Nigerians are living in poverty - Report
About 71 million Nigerians live in poverty, according to a new international report, and Yobe State has been named the most hungry state in the country.
Tonye Cole, who is running for governor of Rivers state as a member of the APC party, gave a speech at a conference in Abuja to mark World Hunger Day. In his speech, he said that some UN figures show that 25 thousand people die every day from hunger, including 10 thousand children around the world.
Cole also said that the Nigerian Statistics Authority thought that 133 million people in the country were hungry in different ways.
He said that Nigeria needs to do something about poverty if it wants to solve the problem.
Experts say that there are other reasons for poverty in Nigeria, such as war, a crooked government, and a bad health care system. They say that these problems must be fixed as soon as possible if hunger is to end in the country.
Experts say that 44.2 percent of people in Yobe State are hungry, which is the most of any state in Nigeria. It also has the highest rate of malnutrition, at 27.4 points.
The states of Zamfara, Kebbi, and Jigawa, which have the same problem as Yobe, are then broke and hungry.
