At least 6 million people are seeking emergency aid in northeastern Nigeria - MDD

The United Nations has stated that at least 6 million people in northeastern Nigeria require emergency relief and has issued a warning that the situation will get worse if no immediate action is done.

In his remarks at a press conference in Geneva, Matthias Schmale, the head of the parliament's humanitarian commission, urged people to take action to prevent the situation in northeastern Nigeria from getting worse. He noted that Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states are home to about 4 million 300,000 people who are suffering from severe hunger.

In the northeast of Nigeria, there has been a protracted struggle between the Nigerian military and terrorist organisations like Boko Haram since 2009.

In this terrorist fight, 2 million people have been displaced and an estimated 40.000 people have died, making it one of the biggest humanitarian catastrophes of the twenty-first century.
