Jonah Yellow escaped after spending years in detention
Yunusa Yellow Kura, a young man from Kano state who has been detained since 2018, managed to flee after a protracted trial on the allegation of kidnapping a woman named Ese Oruru who lives in the south of Nigeria.
Yellow had previously been held captive at Jibar Bayelsa's home of Hali before being returned to Kano state.
The Kano State Correctional Institution's spokeswoman, Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa, reportedly verified that Yellow would be released after serving the entirety of his term.
Yellow was imprisoned in Bayelsa state because he was charged with illegally marrying Ese Oruru from the start.
Justice Jane Inyang, who presided over the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, handed down a 26-year prison term to Yunusa Yellow after his arraignment. However, the ruling was appealed by Yellow's attorneys, including Abdul Mohammed SAN, Yusuf Dankofa, Huwaila Mohammed, Sunusi Musa, and Kayode Olaosebikan.
The appeal was denied by the Court of Appeal's judges, who were led by JS Iykegh.
They claimed, however, that Yellow's sentencing was illegal since the judges had reduced the age to seven even though they had found Yellow guilty of the offence.
They determined that the sentence would begin on the day Yellow was taken into custody in 2018.
Yellow, which has been pleading for Northern Nigeria's authorities to join the discussion, was just released from prison.
