JUNE 12: Today is a day to remember the great Nigerian politician, who lost his life for democracy to take root in this country - Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has said that people like MKO Abiola have helped democracy grow in Nigeria.
In his speech for freedom Day on Monday, President Tinubu said, "Abiola gave his life for democracy in this country, and when he got a foothold, he turned to God."
Ibrahim Babangida, the former president, called off the election right before Abiola's name was about to be called as the winner.
What Babangida did has caused many political problems in Nigeria. At that time, many people who were against the military rule in this country left Nigeria because they were afraid of being caught.
Abiola's election was one of the few where everyone in the country thought he was a good candidate, but the military stopped it anyway.
Tinubu said that his government is for the people and that it will put more effort into making sure that the poor get a share of the country's wealth.
He asked Nigerians to keep praying for the country and helping the government so that it could do its job well.
