Trump's voice was revealed when he was talking about some secret US documents

Donald Trump was heard on an audio tape telling the media in the United States that he had promised to preserve a classified government document after leaving the White House.

The former president is heard on the audio tape looking through some papers and remarking, "This is not a small secret."

CNN was the first to gain the voice, but CBS, an American broadcaster connected to the BBC, also acquired the recording.

Trump has declined to admit guilt to the charge of handling sensitive documents improperly.

The roughly two-minute audio clip was initially made public by CNN, which claimed it was from a meeting between Mr. Trump and numerous writers who were working on a biography of his former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, in July 2021 at Mr. Trump's golf resort in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The phrase "these are the documents" uttered by Mr. Trump in reference to a document he referred to as "top secret" may be heard.

"The soldiers did this and gave it to me," he claimed. "You saw that I can tell you because I'm president. It's still a secret, but I can't do it anymore.

It appears to be the same recording that federal prosecutors used as evidence against Mr. Trump in their indictment.

It is unknown if the materials Mr. Trump was referring to at the time were ever discovered by investigators.
