165 million people fell into poverty in three years - MDD

According to the UN, there has been an upsurge in poverty in developing nations, where 165 million people would be subsisting on less than $3.65 in 2023.

The Corona pandemic, inflation, and the war in Ukraine, according to a projection released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Thursday, dragged 165 million people into poverty between 2020 and 2023.

According to a comment from Achim Steiner, the chairman of the UNDP, "Countries that have invested in the past three years, to support the less powerful, have helped to protect many of their people from falling into poverty."

According to him, communities in nations that have not made any headway in fighting poverty are more prone to experience the issue of rising poverty.

Additionally, the UN has asked for debt relief for developing nations.

46 nations currently spend more than 10% of their GDP on aiding the poor, he noted.

The paper claims that the countries' struggles to help the poor among them in terms of health, education, and other essentials of life are made more difficult by the debt payments made by the governments.
