19-year-old Cyprus-bound Nigerian student arrested at Abuja airport with illicit drugs concealed inside crayfish (Video)
Benjamin Nnamani Daberechi, a 19-year-old Nigerian student, was detained for trying to smuggle 7.2 kg of methamphetamine to Cyprus, where he planned to pursue undergraduate studies. The drug was hidden in crayfish.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) agents detained Benjamin at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.
In a statement released on Sunday, July 16, 2023, Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, disclosed this.
The teen suspect was detained on Wednesday, July 12, during a passenger outbound clearance on Turkish Airlines aircraft TK 0624, according to a portion of the statement.
"Daberechi claimed to be a student traveling to Cyprus for studies during an interview with agents, but after a thorough examination of his luggage, he was discovered to be in possession of 7.2 kg of a white material that had been carefully hidden inside a sack of crayfish. However, a field test of the drug revealed that it was Methamphetamine.
In a similar vein, agents of the Tincan Port Command of the Agency on Tuesday, July 11, intercepted a consignment of 116.5kg of Colorado, a potent strain of cannabis, hidden in bags underneath a pile of used car parts on the floor of a container bearing three units of used cars imported from Toronto, Canada, and marked FCIU 8459700.
According to intelligence, the Agency had asked for a complete assessment of the container that landed at the port's TICT terminal on June 14th.
However, 233 packets of the illegal material were found hidden inside travel bags on the container's bottom, which was then covered with discarded auto parts, during a joint assessment with the Nigerian Customs, DSS, and other stakeholders on Tuesday, July 11.
