3,000 athletes from around 30 countries will participate in the Francophonie Games in DRCongo
Workers in the city of Kinshasa have one week until the start of the Francophonie competition to attempt to finish their tasks before it begins.
Prior to the tournament's start on July 28, some 3,000 players from about 30 different countries are expected to gather in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
However, the Stade des Martyrs was where the festivities began.
The 9th Francophonie Games, a quadrennial competition that mixes sports and culture, will be held in DRCongo in 2019.
The tournament was originally slated to take place in 2021, but the cholera outbreak forced the competition to be postponed. The competition was then again postponed last year because the equipment was not ready.
Christophe Lutundula, the DRCongo's minister of foreign affairs, told reporters on Thursday that getting money to sponsor an international sporting event is challenging, particularly at this time when we are at war.
Most of the eastern region of the country has been plagued by armed groups during the 1990s and 2000s.
