A smart Nigerian student broke a record that had stood for 46 years at Sokoto University. He is the first person to ever finish with a first class in political science.

Ismail Aliyu, a very smart Nigerian student, is the first person in the history of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) to finish with first class in the department of political science.

Aliyu graduated with a Commute Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.53 out of a possible 5.0, which broke a mark that had stood for 46 years.

People say that Ismail Aliyu, who is from Etsuworu in the Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State, was motivated to get first class after hearing that no one has ever gotten first class honor from the department.

The Department of Political Science was added to the Danfodiyo University in 1977, two years after it opened in 1975.

UDUS is one of the universities of the second generation. Others include the University of Calabar, the University of Ilorin, the University of Jos, the University of Maiduguri, the University of Port Harcourt, and the Ado Bayero University in Kano.

Aliyu told The News Digest, a school newspaper, that he wanted to break the record when he saw that he had gotten a 4.63 CGPA in his 100-level classes.

"When I saw my 100-level results, I became more interested in graduating with first-class honor," he said.

Aliyu said that in his second year of college, his CGPA got a little bit worse and went down to 4.58. Also, he kept the same 4.58 GPA in 300-level classes and ended up with a CGPA of 4.53.

"I've never given up, even though I've had problems and my grade point average has gone down from 100."

He also said that he was able to do it because he read a lot and didn't have any love relationships that might have gotten in the way of his goal.
