FIFA is planning to give away 20,000 free tickets to the 2023 Women's World Cup.
FIFA is giving away 20,000 free tickets to Women's World Cup games in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Dunedin because sales in New Zealand have been slow.
The majority of the one million tickets sold so far have been bought by Australians, whose "Matildas" team is seen as a real threat for the title.
Sarai Bareman, who is in charge of women's football for FIFA, said that it was harder to get people to come to soccer games in New Zealand because soccer isn't as popular there. She also said that the "Football Ferns" have never won a game in their five previous World Cup outings.
Xero, the official partner of this year's big event, is giving away 5,000 free tickets to games in the four places in New Zealand that will host them.
Jacinda Ardern, who used to be the prime minister of New Zealand, is also trying to get people interested.
She wrote in an Instagram post, "My feed is going to be full of football talk for the next few weeks. Not because I'm an expert, but because I'm so excited that New Zealand is hosting such a big event."
"There are still tickets to some games in Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington, and Hamilton, New Zealand, so this is a reminder to get online and join in!"
On July 20, New Zealand's season starts with a game against Norway in Auckland.
