Britain will return the money stolen by James Ibori to Nigeria

According to the Reuters news agency, after more than ten years of planning, the British government is almost done taking the necessary steps to return to Nigeria the money that the former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, stole.

According to Reuters, the British prosecutor informed the court that Mr. Ibori will donate $129 million to the nation.

Prosecutors had before claimed that James Ibori had stolen $165 million or more from southern Nigeria's oil-rich Delta state.

The 5.8 million dollars that the former governor had stolen were returned to Nigeria by Britain two years prior.

He was extradited from Dubai to the UK in 2012, where he was accused with 10 money-laundering-related charges. Ibori returned to Nigeria in 2017 after serving time in prison in the UK.

Mr. Ibori informed Reuters in a brief message that he planned to challenge the court's decision to seize his assets.

According to Reuters, it is anticipated to start returning the money on Friday.

The former governor was convicted guilty of embezzlement by the British in 2012, and he was given a 13-year prison term.

In front of the London court, the former governor entered a plea of guilty to 10 accusations against him for illicit financing and conspiracy to conduct fraud.

Following the UK's 5.8 million dollar payment to Nigeria in 2021 for the former governor's corruption, this is the second occasion that the money that the former governor took will be returned to Nigeria.

A deal to repay the money that thieves stole was signed by the governments of Nigeria and the UK in 2016.
