ECOWAS plans to hold a conference on the Niger coup
In the near future today, the ECOWAS group of West African leaders will hold a meeting in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to discuss the issue of the military coup in the Republic of Niger.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is also the chairman of Ecowas will preside over the meeting, which is expected to be attended by the leaders of the region.
The president of Ecowas, in a statement he signed, condemned the coup, promising that Ecowas and other countries will do everything necessary to protect democracy.
He added that the organization will do everything possible to ensure that civil government continues to exist in the West African region.
In the announcement of the ECOWAS meeting that came from the presidential palace of Nigeria, she said that the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris and the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in their separate discussions with President Tinubu, expressed the support of the United States and MDD on the status of the Ecowas group and the president of Nigeria.
The meeting will be held while the military that overthrew the coup continues to detain President Muhammad Bazoum who overthrew his government.
France and the EU have already announced the suspension of the support they give to Niger as a result of the military coup.
The African Unity Organization, on its part, said it has given the soldiers 15 days to return to their barracks and restore civilian rule in the West African country.
