NCAA warns aircraft owners of jet fuel pollution
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has issued a warning to airline owners over jet fuel contamination at the aircraft's fuel tanks.
The caution follows the discovery of a significant amount of water in the fuel tank of one of Max Air's aircraft, which also happens to be the owner of the Boeing 737 that was grounded last week.
According to reports, Capt. Musa Nuhu, director general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, said that the organisation is looking into several jet fuel producers to determine how the gasoline mixed with the water.
"We are researching everything," he continued, "and we discovered that this plane was fueled at airports in Lagos, Kano, and Abuja. We are thus awaiting the results of the inquiry into these petrol stations, and we will suspend any station that is found to be at fault until the issue is resolved.
To assure the purity of jet fuel and adhere to the cleaning procedures is one of our agency's primary preventive actions, he said.
The director went on to say that water pollution is one of the main causes of fuel pollution, which affects aircraft engines and contributes to past airline accidents.
Additionally, before allowing the planes to use the fuel, the agency instructed its employees at the fuel tanks to measure the fuel and check its purity.
