Parents of students are angry with the increase in tuition fees in parts of Nigeria

The decision to raise school fees at various levels has incensed parents of students in Nigeria. This is due to the country's high cost of living, which is related to the removal of fuel subsidies and the ongoing depreciation of the Naira, its national currency.

Along with the number of private schools that have raised tuition, Unity Schools, which are federal government-run schools, are now at the forefront of this trend.

The cost of Unity schools has reportedly increased from the previous 45 thousand Naira that new pupils had to pay to the current 100 thousand Naira.

According to the NAN news agency, the parents were upset at what they perceived as the current government's dishonesty in pledging to offer education for all residents while actually attempting to expel those who are studying for a living.

Small business owner Mitchelle Uzor in Lagos State told NAN that given the rising cost of living and the way that schools are raising their tuition, it is clear that education will be challenging for the underprivileged children in a nation that prides itself on offering high-quality education to young children.

The only option left for low-income families that cannot afford private schools is Unity government schools.

Government employee and housewife Funmilayo Olubiyo told NAN that the government needs to pay attention to the poor because it is now tough to pay the children's school fees.

With the exception of Lagos state, the majority of low-income people continue to lament the rise in tuition fees, particularly in the northern parts of the nation where the cost of living is higher.
