Paris Doesn't Worry That Riots Will Hurt the 2024 Olympics

On Monday, the city government of Paris said it was "not worried" about how almost a week of riots might affect next year's Olympic Games.
Since a police officer killed a teen during a traffic stop last week, France has had several nights of violence in the neighborhoods of Paris and all over the country.
Even though Emmanuel Gregoire, who works for Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, said he was "worried about the situation in France," he said he wasn't worried about how it would affect the Olympics.
"The Games are still a year away. Gregoire told AFP, "We shouldn't mix up our calendars."

The Olympic flame is a "extraordinary chance to bring hope" to a country that is "showing very worrying signs," said Mayor Hidalgo at a meeting on Monday to talk about the route of the torch through the capital.
Pro-Tibet protesters blocked the path when the Olympic flame went through Paris in 2008 before the Beijing Games. This meant that the route had to be finished by bus.
"We all remember the things that didn't always go well," Hidalgo said. "We want this to bring joy and enthusiasm."
Her sports chief Pierre Rabadan said, "We will meet the security needs of the Games." He also said that there would "no doubt" be problems.
Amelie Oudea-Castera, who is in charge of sports, said on Monday that the government had "taken steps" in the past few days to "again step up security of infrastructure" for the Olympics next year.
"All of this is bad for the country. What's going on isn't helping France's reputation abroad, Oudea-Castera added.
Still, "there were events like this about a year before the London Games, when police violence led to very violent protests. "The London Games were great," she said.
Before the 2022 Champions League final at the Stade de France, France's ability to host big events like the upcoming Rugby World Cup and the Olympics was called into question because of how badly they handled the crowd.
The site, which will be the main event of the Games, is in one of the Paris suburbs that has been shaken by violence since a police officer shot and killed Nahel M., 17, on Tuesday.
