Schools are closed in Kenya due to protests over the cost of living

Kenya's capital city of Nairobi and Mombasa's schools were shuttered during the three days of nationwide protests against the high cost of living.

At least 14 people died as a result of the protests that took place last week.

According to the interior minister, the government has received information that some militants aim to target the general public and security forces on Wednesday near various schools in Nairobi and the Mombasa region.

Despite a Monday attempt to have the protests declared illegal by the country's high court, Kenyan police chief Japheth Koome has made protests against tax rises illegal.

Ten people were shot by the police last Wednesday during a related protest.

In Nairobi, more than 50 schoolchildren were also gassed with tear gas while attending classes; they were taken immediately to the hospital.

According to accounts, Nairobi police are shooting tear gas at demonstrators.

In the south of the nation, armed protesters stopped the roadways on which they were willing to pass for payment.

Human rights organisations criticised the police for using too much force, in their opinion.

Concerned about the situation in Kenya, local and foreign organisations and embassies have asked for a dialogue session to find a solution.
