Tension after gunmen in Ogun kill a pastor and abduct seven other worshipers.
As a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was shot and died in Abule-Ori, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, there was a tangible sense of unease.
Seven worshipers were also kidnapped by the gunman as they invaded the church on July 1, 2023, a Saturday.
Soji Ganzallo, the commander of the Ogun State So-Safe corps, provided confirmation of this on Sunday in Abeokuta, the state capital of Ogun.
However, he claimed that following the kidnapping, his officers had freed seven churchgoers and killed one of the captors in a shootout.
"The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Desires of Nations Parish, under Ogun Province 22, Abule-Ori in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, under ACC Jimoh Rasaki Omoniyi, received a distress call that some of the members were attacked during a vigil, while seven members of the church were kidnapped and the pastor killed," Ganzallo was quoted as saying in a statement.
He claimed that the corps' officers were instructed to pursue the culprits in order to save the victims unharmed, adding that "the officers swung into action immediately."
Ganzallo went on to say that the efforts of the corps had paid off because "the seven victims were rescued unhurt while one of the kidnappers was killed and many of the suspects sustained serious injury during a fire exchange."
He also said that a manhunt had been started for the fugitive alleged kidnappers by the combined police and So-Safe Corps squad.
