Following a $1 million cash embezzlement scandal, the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana has detained former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Management Cecilia Dapaah.
The university was detained at her residence on Sunday, July 22, in connection with alleged corruption offences following accusations of money being stolen from her residence, according to the prosecutor's office.
According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, "Cecilia Dapaah is being questioned by officers."
Following public clamour when it was claimed that the minister had hidden more than $1 million in cash in her Accra home, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana accepted the minister's resignation.
Following uproar over the revelation that the Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, had hidden cash in her home that was allegedly taken by two of her workers, she resigned from her position.
While the nation is experiencing a severe economic crisis, many Ghanaians and anti-corruption activists have questioned how the government university acquired these funds and why she chose to keep the money at her home.
Two members of the minister's household staff, along with three other people, were reportedly charged in court in Accra on Friday for allegedly taking millions of cedis, $300,000 in euros, and other assets from her home in October 2022, according to local media.
"I can guarantee that the amount of money mentioned is not the same as what my husband and I reported to the police," Cecilia Dapaah wrote in the statement she penned to announce her resignation as a minister. I understand the extreme significance that such news has for someone in my situation.
The money was allegedly utilised by her housekeepers to purchase homes, vehicles, and pricey gifts from their secretaries.
