Why INEC Has Refused To Comment On 2023 Polls – Yakubu

Despite the desire to remark on the general elections in 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given an explanation for why it has refrained.

This was said by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, during a meeting with the RECs on Tuesday in Abuja.

The official review of how the elections were conducted was launched at the conference.

"Now that the election is over, it's time to take a look inside and do a stocktake, assessment, and appraisal.

Since the election, a variety of viewpoints on various parts of the February and March elections have been voiced by political parties, candidates, observers, analysts, and members of the general public.

Such a wide range of viewpoints is to be expected, and the commission welcomes all of them insofar as they aim to strengthen our democracy and future electoral processes, according to Yakubu.

He claimed that the commission purposefully refrained from participating in the post-election commentary for a number of reasons.

First, rather than participating in the acrimonious and frequently emotionally charged public conversation about the election, we prefer to listen more and learn from it. Second, we see no need to initiate the process since we intend to review the election ourselves. Third, by participating in the continuing discussions, the commission would like to avoid coming seen as defensive or justifying.

The Commission does not intend to harm or improve the chances of plaintiffs in the various election petition courts beyond what is required of us by the legal process, which is the final and possibly most significant point.
