1.3 Billion Scam: EFCC Arrests Sule Lamido and Others in the Supreme Court
The Economic Corrupt Practices Commission (EFCC), sued the former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and his son, Mustapha Lamido to the Supreme Court on July 25, 2023 from the Abuja Court of Appeal.
The former governor along with his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, Aminu Wada Abubakar, and their companies, Bamaina Holdings Ltd and Speeds International Ltd were arraigned before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of 37 for legalizing illegal money amounting to 1.35 billion Naira.
Lamido was accused of abuse in his position as governor between 2007 and 2015 and misappropriating a lot of money he received from the companies that the Jigawa state government gave him contracts under him.
The case that started in 2015, the agency called more than 16 witnesses before closing its case.
However, Justice Ojukwu, ignored the issue and accepted the statement made by the EFCC that Lamido and the other defendants should answer and be ordered to defend themselves.
Lamido went to the Court of Appeal where he denied the charges against him.
The Court of Appeal made its decision on July 25, stating that the case filed by the defendants was not valid, dismissed the charges against them, and released the former governor and his son.
However, in the notice of appeal filed in the Supreme Court dated July 31, 2023, the EFCC is asking the Supreme Court to set aside all the judgments of the Court of Appeal and order the return and appeal to the Supreme Court.
